is going to get longer. I think that’s a good thing. Congress can’t do real oversight, let alone legislate, on a two-day schedule (and not all oversight is a game of get-the-president). Rep. Jack Kingston complains that the longer schedule isn’t family-friendly. It does impose a strain on congressmen, since many of them feel obliged to leave their spouse and kids in their congressional district so as to fend off charges of going Beltway. The congressmen ought to tell their constituents that they’re their ambassadors to Washington and are taking their families with them. That’s an imperfect solution, but it beats not having Congress do its job.
