CBS anchor Bob Schieffer tells Howard Kurtz today (couldn’t find the link yet, sorry) on the Durbin Speech: “I just don’t think it’s that big a deal…He said he went too far and I take him at his word. We don’t cover every apology by a politician who says he didn’t mean things quite that way.” Kurtz didn’t note what Brent Bozell noted last week: in January of 1995, when House Majority Leader Dick Armey misspoke before reporters, and called Rep. Barney Frank “Barney Fag” — an unintentional gaffe preserved only by a reporter’s personal cassette recorder — it was the number one story that night on CBS.
