It is a huge pleasure to welcome a new magazine into the world — especially one edited by Daniel Hannan, the British writer and member of the European Parliament. A quarterly, it’s called “The Conservative.” And it is put out by AECR, the Alliance for European Conservatives and Reformists.
To check out the new issue — the inaugural issue, I should say — go here. The Conservative is a print magazine, and it is online as well. The website is a little different. You turn the pages, just as you would the print issue. You’ll see what I mean.

I sat up straighter when I read something that Dan put in his welcome:
The one thing that the contributors have in common, as conservatives, is that we are driven by love rather than hate. Not for us the grievance and victimhood that characterises large parts of the Left. Not for us the desire to tear things down. We are moved, rather, by respect for the things that make us what we are: our nations, our laws, our families, our customs.
There is something in the water that British conservatives drink — something good. In a Q&A podcast last year, Roger Scruton — now Sir Roger Scruton — said,
I think that, in the end, there is something that unites all conservatives, which is that they are pursuing something they love. My view is that the Left is united by hatred, but we are united by love: love of our country, love of institutions, love of the law, love of family, and so on. And what makes us conservatives is the desire to protect those things, and we’re up against people who want to destroy them, and it’s very simple.
There is something beautiful about the phrase “Volume 1, Issue 1.” Hurray for Hannan and The Conservative.
