Consistent Moderate?

Jonah, I just caught the latest “What’s Your Problem,” in which Peter Beinart calls Hillary a “consistent moderate” (and you appear to agree). Well, maybe my memory’s off, but as best I recall, for years The New Republic treated Hillary as the epitome of the sort of left-leaning trend that the Democrats need to repudiate. As a useful exercise, I suggest that someone go back over old New Republic issues through the 1990′s and see how they treat Hillary Clinton. My guess is that this search will paint a picture very much at odds with what Beinart is saying. If so, there may be inconsistency, not only in who Hillary is, but in TNR’s line on Hillary. Now, again, I could be wrong about this. It’s been a while. But I seem to recall jab after jab at left-leaning Hillary by what was, at the time, a much more centrist TNR.
