A Constitution for All

From a 1987 NR piece by Richard Vigilante on the Senate circus that was Judge Bork’s confirmation hearing:

Judicial conservatism is not a covert grab for power. The philosophy that Bork and others—the most important of whom being Antonin Scalia—have been working out for two decades in papers, speeches, and, lately, opinions and dissents from the bench is not a scholarly bombardment meant to soften up the political beachhead for conservative policy-nerds. Ultimately, liberals have as much stake as conservatives in seeing Bork & Co.’s constitutional philosophy triumph. His thought is aimed not at forwarding any particular political agenda but at maintaining the arena in which conservatives and liberals can do battle for the hearts and minds of a free people.
