A Cool Thriller for the Dog Days

I don’t read too many books in the thriller genre, even though many cross my desk; flip-through-and-toss-out is usually how it goes. But The Cold Kiss, by John Rector, is a highly rewarding exception. This is one I just couldn’t stop reading: It’s an old-fashioned suspenser about a young couple on the lam, who decide to give a sickly man a lift — only to end up snowbound in a motel with his dead body . . . and the hundreds of thousands of dollars they discover hidden in his luggage. It’s a classic noir set-up, and one that, in this instance, doesn’t let the reader go. This is Rector’s first published novel, and it hits the stores this week — just in time for the heat wave: There’s no better place to spend a few imaginative hours these days than Rector’s snowbound motel.
