The Corner

Cornhusker Honor

Last week, I had an item here in the Corner about Nebraska and Jews. Why? Because of the below exchange, in the now-historic appearance of Rick Sanchez on Pete Dominick’s radio show:

Sanchez: “I can’t see somebody not getting a job somewhere because they’re Jewish.”

Dominick: “Well, then you’ve never been to Nebraska.”

I said, “Um, I have the feeling that it’s Dominick who’s never been to Nebraska.” I said some other things too.

Anyway, as you can imagine, I got much mail from Nebraska: and much mail concerning Nebraska and Jews. Try just one letter, reflective of the whole mailbag:

Any casual sports fan knows that Nebraska hosts the College World Series every year in Rosenblatt Stadium, right smack in the middle of Omaha. The stadium is named after the second Jewish mayor of Omaha, John Rosenblatt, who served from 1954 to 1961.

By the way, New York City first had a Jewish mayor in 1974. (Abe Beame — whose grandson I worked with, years later.) (Apropos of nothing.)
