A Couple Not to Forget

As I mention in my column, the dissident known as “Antúnez” was rearrested by the Cuban regime. He was seized along with his wife Iris Pérez Aguilera, who is also a dissident. They are an amazingly brave couple — a couple to get to know. I’d like to mention here, on the Corner, that Rep. Lincoln Diaz-Balart (R., Fla.) took to the floor of the House last night to speak about Antúnez and Iris. Next to him, on an easel, was an enlarged photo of the couple. Diaz-Balart read a letter that Antúnez had written to Raúl Castro. (The congressman refers to him as the “titular Cuban dictator,” suggesting that Raúl’s older brother is still the real power.) To see a video of Diaz-Balart’s speech, go here.

As he and his wife were being beaten and carted off, Antúnez shouted, “Long live human rights!” Long live this couple, too. And they will have a better chance of dying in their beds, at home, as long as people such as Diaz-Balart keep a spotlight on them.
