Covered California, the Golden State’s Obamacare exchange, botched over 100,000 eligibility notices thanks to a computer error.
From November 22 to December 7, the exchange mailed 113,847 households to inform people that they were eligible for insurance or premium subsidies. However, the letters contained missing information or blank spaces.
“It seemed to contradict whether the enrollee was eligible. It was confusing to people,” Covered California spokeswoman Anne Gonzales said.
As the Los Angeles Times reports, the notices caused people to flood the trio of service centers – which were already struggling to handle high call volume – with even more phone calls. The average wait time was 36 minutes.
According to Gonzalez, the issues with the letters have been rectified and the exchange is sending letters to those who received bungled notices.
