Cranky Englishmen

As of yesterday, foreigners who want to become subjects of the Queen have to take a test (see sample questions here). It’s more a test of “Britishness” than our test is of “Americanness” — we ask prospective citizens mainly civics and history questions, when we should also be asking them to demonstrate a familiarity with American life — things like “Name a traditional Thanksgiving food” or “Name one river in the United States.” The point is not hard questions, but questions anyone could answer so long as they were paying minim,al attention to the country around them.
