The Crisis Speech

On C-SPAN tomorrow evening at 8:00, a gaggle of presidential speechwriters talking about “the crisis speech.”  Taped last month at the Miller Center, the really marvelous public affairs center at the University of Virginia, the program will feature Carter speechwriter Walter Shapiro and Reagan speechwriters Ken Khachigian and yours truly.  But pay special attention to the final quarter hour.  That’s when Nixon speechwriter Ray Price joins the conversation.  A humane, lovely man, and one of the most beautiful writers ever to work in the White House, Ray recounts what it was like to work with Richard Nixon on his resignation speech.  A quarter of a century later, and still profoundly moving.
