Senator Ted Cruz thinks a special prosecutor must be appointed to investigate the IRS.
“We need a special prosecutor with meaningful independence to make sure that justice is served and that our constitutional rights to free speech, to assembly, and to privacy are protected,” he said on the Senate Floor on Thursday.
He referred to the Watergate Scandal, and said that when President Richard Nixon attempted to use the IRS to target political enemies, “it was wrong, it was an abuse of power, and he was rightfully condemned by both sides of the aisle.”
The Obama administration didn’t just attempt to do so, Cruz said, but it also succeeded. The administration proceeded to cover up the truth including by “conveniently” losing Lois Lerner’s e-mails, he said.
Both cases involved an abuse of power, but the difference is that with Nixon, “Republicans had the courage to stand up to their own party,” Cruz noted. “It saddens me that there is not a single Democratic member of this body who has had the courage to stand up to their own party and say that this abuse of power . . . is wrong.”
Cruz continued, “It saddens me to say that the U.S. Department of Justice under Attorney General Eric Holder has become the most partisan department of justice in the history of our country.” He said that both Republican and Democratic alums from the Department of Justice are “heartbroken” to see that the department has become “effectively an arm of the Democratic National Committee.”
