Larison is no fan of mine, if memory serves. But I’ll tell you what. He is the first blogger anywhere that I am aware of that has actually written something critical that is also thoughtful and informed about my forthcoming book (sorry Ezra, that definitely takes you into account). I’m not going to get into the details of my argument months before the book is out. But I will say that I actually agree with much of what Larison has to say about the challenges I’ve faced in making my argument (though obviously, I have my disagreements as well). Also, as he smartly suspects, I am in fact indebted to Erik von Kuehnelt-Leddihn and I do sympathize and agree with much of what he has written in this area (by the way, my Dad was an enormous fan of An Intelligent American’s Guide to Europe and was constantly hectoring me to read it again and again throughout high school). Where I would argue that my book will be groundbreaking is that Kuehnelt-Leddihn and others who shared his views on fascism never carried the argument out as far as I have in the American context nor, needless to say, have they accounted for more recent American politics. For the record, I did not say that my argument has never been made (though I do think there is a great deal readers will have never heard before). I said that it has never been made with this much care and detail. I stand by that, and look forward to Larison’s attempts to correct me when the time comes, should he feel it necessary.
