The Daniels Choice

There’s been a lot of praise for Indiana governor Mitch Daniels in these parts. Here is some more: His current budget proposal includes a school-choice tax credit. Dan Lips of the Heritage Foundation praises it to The Corner: “Indiana parents and taxpayers should be happy that Governor Daniels is promoting this school choice tax credit.  If enacted, the plan will give many families the power to choose the best school for their children.  Taxpayers will also benefit since the program is expected to yield significant fiscal savings over time.  The Friedman Foundation analyzed the fiscal impact of the proposed tax credit plan and found that it could save as much as $4.7 million in the first year.  That’s important since the state is facing a large budget deficit.  And while Governor Daniels’s program is designed to be relatively small at first, similar programs in other states (like Arizona, Florida, Pennsylvania, and Iowa) have been expanded with bipartisan support once they’ve been in place for a few years.”
