Davey V. Locke

By a vote of 7-2, the Supreme Court upholds Washington State’s exclusion of students pursuing degrees in theology from a state scholarship program. Such a policy, Chief Justice Rehnquist wrote for the majority, does not violate the First Amendment’s guarantee of the free exercise of religion. Justices Scalia and Thomas dissented.
