David Gregory Grills Pelosi on Late-Term Abortion

NBC’s David Gregory pummelled House minority leader Nancy Pelosi (D., Calif.) with tough questions about the efforts, such as those taking place in Texas, to prohibit abortion after 20 weeks of pregnancy, or in Gregory’s words, “attempt[s] to narrow abortion rights.”

“Do you see what’s happening in the states as laying the groundwork for the potential to undermine abortion rights?” he asked Pelosi.

“This is a women’s health issue,” Pelosi said in response. “And, again, if you want to win the day, take the issue to the extreme. But the fact is, every single day, in the ordinary, the American people, America’s families, have to make decisions about their families, and that should be made by them, not by the Texas or United States Congress.”

A dozen states have passed legislation banning abortion after 20 weeks of pregnancy. Polling shows that a majority of Americans, and a majority of Texans, favor such a ban. Gregory relentlessly pressed Pelosi on this point, asking: “Do you fear that we’re at a new age of the erosion of abortion rights?” The minority leader responded semi-coherently.

“I think we’re at a place where a woman’s health is in danger, because of, whether it is family planning, or contraception, or any issues that relate to women’s health, there is an assault on that in the Congress, on the ongoing, and in other parts of the country,” she said. ”So we have to be ever vigilant, and fight for this. This is, again, this is about respect for women, the judgements that women make, and their doctors, about their reproductive health. It’s an important part of who women are.”

Earlier this month, Pelosi was unable to answer a reporter’s question about the moral difference between late-term abortions and the murders of Philadelphia abortion provider Dr. Kermit Gosnell. Pelosi proceeded to mock the journalist who asked the question, as other reporters looked on and laughed.
