It’s only Opening Day, but New York Mets fans are already booing. No, they weren’t heckling the team (yet) – but, instead, Mayor Bill de Blasio.
The mayor, who has grown increasingly unpopular since taking office in January after winning by a large margin in the fall election, was met with a swell of boos from Citi Field attendees as he took the mound for the ceremonial first pitch. He was booed again as he walked off.
De Blasio, who is actually a Boston Red Sox fan, wore a No. 6 Mets jersey in tribute of Rico Petrocelli, who played infield for Boston from 1963 to 1976. Just imagine the jeers if he had done that at Yankee Stadium.
