Deal or No Deal?

President Bush was carefully re-calibrating his “family values don’t stop at the border” approach to the issue of illegal immigration, but given the neglect of the past five years when he talks about the imperative to control our borders his new emphasis isn’t too convincing.  Opportunistic Democrats can easily highlight the administration’s do-nothing approach to date and actually sound much tougher on security.  If the president expects these border improvements and the fraud-proof i.d. card to be in place and effective in 2008–why not wait till then to address the question of what to do about the illegal immigrants who remain?  He’s waited five years to address the issue, why can’t the rest of us wait two?
