In Defense of Derb

This is really appropos of pretty much nothing. But it dawned on me the other day that the Egyptian ferry disaster has completely disappeared from the American radar. If you recall, Derb recounted how when he learned that a cruise ship went down, he thought it was full of Americans and was very interested. When he learned it wasn’t full of Americans, he lost interest. He said this in blunt language, to be sure, but it elicited all of the usual tut-tuts from bloggers and emailers posing as adherents of the creed of universal human brotherhood. Since then, I don’t think anybody has said word one about that disaster. If it had been full of Americans, we’d still be talking about it. It seems that Derb’s gaffe was to prematurely tell the truth.

I’m just saying, as Rod would say.
