I think it would be a disaster in more ways than people realize if Israel stopped now. Aside from the (more important) strategic issues, there’s a public relations issue. If Israel was bombing Lebanon proper as an end in itself, that is very hard to defend and will count poorly against Israel. If, on the other hand, this was a necessary measure for the end-game of routing Hezbollah it’s justfiable. If Israel gives up too soon, not only will it have lost its chance to crush Hezbollah, but it will also be seen as “punishing” ordinary Lebanese as a way to get what they want. I don’t think that’s in Israel’s interest either. They need to finish the job.
