Representative Emanuel Cleaver (D., Mo.) compared gun-rights rhetoric to the “words” that led to the Holocaust. Cleaver was discussing the ricin-laced letters sent to President Obama and New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg, in which the sender expressed anger over gun-control measures.
“Before any act of violence, particularly a public act, they’re preceded by words, whether it was the Holocaust, or in our tradition, the Resurrection,” he said on MSNBC yesterday.
Cleaver went on to say he believes ”a lot of people contributed to” the inspiration for the letters, because “there are people who can easily be tricked, whose minds are not psychologically strong enough to decipher truth from fiction, and we see that in what just happened.”
