Representative John Yarmuth (D., KY) unloaded on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s speech before Congress on Iran, calling it “fear-mongering,” “condescending,” and “straight out of Dick Cheney’s playbook.”
In a press conference following the prime minister’s address, Yarmuth pulled no punches in his criticism of the hawkish Israeli leader.
“I resented the condescending tone that he used,” he said, saying he felt Netanyahu lectured Congress on the dangers posed by Iran. “I don’t think there is any doubt that anyone in Congress or the administration understands that Iran has been a bad actor in the region . . . We all know that. It’s nice of him to remind us.”
“This speech was straight out of the Dick Cheney playbook,” he said. “This was fear-mongering at its ultimate. Phrases like essentially saying nuclear war is inevitable if this deal were to be accepted . . . These are things that, I think, are part of what Dick Cheney would’ve done and did. This has been the prime minister’s pattern.”
Yarmuth even compared Netanyahu to a “child” for pushing for a “perfect” nuclear deal. “He’s like the child who say, ‘I want to go to Disneyland every day, eat ice cream and drink Coca-Cola every day, and not go to school,’” the lawmaker said.
