In the course of a public forum on gun control yesterday hosted by the Denver Post, Colorado representative Diana DeGette — who is joining President Obama in Colorado today — was pressed by a constituent about how he could defend himself against a home intrusion given the restrictions signed into law last week by Colorado governor John Hickenlooper. The questioner’s microphone either gives out intermittently or he is not speaking directly into it, but he concludes by asking, “What about me?”

“Good news for you,” DeGette responded. “You live in Denver, the DPD [Denver Police Department] would be there within minutes. . . . You’d probably be dead, anyway.”

DeGette is the lead sponsor of a ban on high-capacity magazines in the House. During the course of the forum, she also revealed that she did not understand that magazines can be reloaded. “I will tell you these are ammunition, they’re bullets, so the people who have those now they’re going to shoot them, so if you ban them in the future, the number of these high capacity magazines is going to decrease dramatically over time because the bullets will have been shot and there won’t be any more available,” she said.
