Representative Jared Polis (D., Colo.), one of the leading proponents of immigration reform, melted down on the House floor for not being allowed to address activists sitting in the gallery, which would have violated chamber rules. Amid calls that he was “out of order,” he refused to back off, yelling that the activists in the gallery would not have to be there if the House would simply pass an immigration-reform bill.
“And you’re saying we’re addressing them, and that’s what you’re upset about, Madame Speaker?!” Polis shouted. “I want you, Madame Speaker, to address the reason that they are here!”
“They are here because our government is tearing apart their families, Madame Speaker!” he continued as the speaker pro tempore pounded the gavel. “I want the Speaker to understand that the Speaker is obstructing H.R. 15 from coming to the floor!”
Polis eventually settled down as he continued to push for immigration reform.
