Democratic representative Luis Gutiérrez admits that he’ll be paying more for health insurance under Obamacare.
“As a member of Congress, at my salary, I’m going to pay more when I gain access to that,” Gutiérrez confessed on CNN on Tuesday. He said he realized the law would cost him more during a conversation with his daughter, a student at LSU.
”She said, ‘Sure, dad, you’re going to pay a little more because you make a lot more than a lot of other people in America make,’” he explained. “She’s absolutely right.”
The Affordable Care Act requires members of Congress to purchase their health insurance, previously obtained from the Federal Employees Health Benefit Plan, from the D.C. exchange; they will receive a subsidy to defray their premiums that’s similar in value to the contribution the federal government made toward their insurance before the law.
Appearing with Gutiérrez, California Republican Devin Nunes floated the idea of passing a Republican-version of health-care reform centered around a free-market approach, have it run concurrently with Obamacare, and see which Americans prefer.
“We sent him a letter four years ago, that deal is still there,” he said, adding that he was “speaking out of turn.” “We could take our plan, let people sign up for the Republican plan, and let people sign up for his plan.”
