Dem Senators Huddle, Showdown Looms

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports:

Sen. Jim Holperin (D-Conover) said Democratic senators were to meet in caucus again on Saturday night at an undisclosed location in Illinois.

Holperin said the senators expect to remain out of state through the weekend, but eventually will have to make a decision – either to come back to Wisconsin, or because Gov. Scott Walker and Republicans move on the issue of ensuring the rights of public employee unions.

The senator said he and his Democratic colleagues have been getting together at least once a day. Most meet personally, but some have called in by phone. Not all of the senators are staying in the same location, he said.

There have been news reports that some senators are in Chicago, but Holperin said he is not in Chicago.

Holperin said he thinks Walker needs to sit down with union leaders, especially after unions said they were willing to negotiate on fringe benefits.

Things in Madison are heating up. The unions are still inside of the capitol and pro-Walker forces are marching.
