I would modify the ending to read: “Very long term, it’s good; short term and medium term, it’s disastrous.” If this is the best defense of the shift to less-than-liberal democracy in Egypt we’ve got, we are in big trouble. There was an awful lot of bloodshed between the era of Martin Luther and Thomas Jefferson. Is that our model now? The Egyptians may not have nukes yet, but they will get a hold of them well before the Muslim Brotherhood turns Jeffersonian. Is Obama bringing the Muslim Brotherhood into Egypt’s government because he hopes for a new liberal Arab democracy in fifty or a hundred years, or because he thinks it’s in America’s best interest over the next five to ten years? Anyone running for president on this platform would be shellacked (or re-shellacked), and deservedly so.
