On MSNBC’s The Rundown, Democratic representative John Yarmuth said House majority whip Steve Scalise should not resign from his leadership position for allegedly speaking to a group of white supremacists. The Kentucky Democrat admitted that he too spoke to a white-supremacist group, albeit for different reasons.

“I spoke to a white-supremacist group before I got into politics, but I was asked to come there and tell them why they were wrong, which I really enjoyed doing,” Yarmuth said. “I think what he ought to do is lead a very affirmative effort in the Congress to expand voting rights and civil rights.”

Yarmuth also acknowledged that it is easier to vet groups that request congressmen for speaking engagements nowadays, and suggested Scalise would be wise to disavow all such white-nationalist groups.
