While commemorating John F. Kennedy’s legacy, MSNBC’s Martin Bashir and D.C. delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton likened Democrats’ opposition to expanding civil rights during Kennedy’s presidency to Republicans’ stance on Obamacare and comprehensive immigration reform.
“The intransigence of the Republicans today, particularly over issues that could be easily settled, reminds me of the intransigence of the southern Democrats who refused to move on civil rights until they had to,” Holmes Norton said. She blamed the GOP for obstructionism on the “preeminent question of the day,” economic inequality, arguing it had taken the place of mid-century racial inequality.
