Department of Family Justice

I noted several weeks ago that Melodee Hanes, the live-in girlfriend of Sen. Max Baucus, had been recommended by Baucus to President Obama for consideration as the U.S. attorney in Montana. It turned out she already had a job at the Justice Department in the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention. She was a political appointee, according to a Justice Department spokesman, although she was listed as occupying a career position, something the Justice Department’s inspector general had frowned on in the past. Now National Journal is reporting that Senator Baucus’s daughter-in-law, Stephanie Denton Baucus, also has a job at Justice as associate director of the Office of Intergovernmental and Public Liaison. This is a political slot “not far from” Hanes. The Justice Department seems to be providing full employment for the Baucus family.
