The Corner

Desperate Politicos of the GOP

So Rudy Giuliani backs an immigration bill whose core security provisions he believes won’t work. Why? To get the whole issue out of the way. Yesterday I called that kind of thinking by Republicans desperate. It’s also destructive to the fortunes of both party and nation. Now Paul Mirengoff presents powerful evidence that Marco Rubio has gone back on earlier promises to voters on this issue. Deception or desperation? The latter I’d say.

Kudos to Giuliani for his honesty. Now we know. The bill’s security provisions are a joke. From now on, let Republican supporters of the bill argue for it openly on the grounds that amnesty is in the best interests of both party and country. I don’t think that argument will fly, but that’s what’s really going on here. Let Giuliani’s frankness be a model for the rest.
