Development Is a State of Mind

It comes as no surprise to hear a campus speaker utter such nonsense as “the Southwest was actually stolen by the United States and was rightfully Upper Mexico.” It’s a little more disconcerting to hear it come from Angela Hayes, who heads something called the Detroit Hispanic Development Council, which receives a substantial amount of funding from federal, state, and city governments (plus a few private sources). But she indeed said it at an MLK Day forum at the University of Michigan, according to the Michigan Review. I wonder if her donors embrace this vision of “Hispanic development.”

UPDATE: An e-mail:

Well the French originally settled Detroit.

Maybe we should tell the Detroit Hispanic Development Council that we would like to do the right thing and give it back.
