Former vice president Dick Cheney brutally dismissed the Senate’s CIA torture report on Wednesday night, calling it “full of crap” and claiming important, actionable intelligence was gleaned from the agency’s enhanced interrogation methods.
“I think it’s a terrible piece of work,” Cheney told Fox News’s Bret Baier. “It seems to me it’s deeply flawed. They didn’t bother to interview key people involved in the program. And I think it’s a classic example of what you see too often in Washington, where a group of politicians get together to throw the professionals under the bus.”
The former vice president repeatedly said that key claims in the report, including allegations that then-president George W. Bush was kept in the dark about the program, were not true. “The notion that the committee is trying to peddle — that somehow the agency is operating on a rogue basis, and we weren’t being told, or the president wasn’t being told — is just a flat-out lie.”
Baier noted that the report claims the enhanced interrogation techniques used on terrorists such as 9/11 mastermind Khaled Sheikh Mohammed were not successful.
“The report’s full of crap,” Cheney replied quickly. “It did, in fact, produce actionable intelligence that was vital in keeping the country safe from further attack.”
