Today, Scott Adams, creator of the Dilbert comic strip, announced that he has been on hospice care for “about a week now.”

“I’ve reached a point of exhaustion.,” he said today on his video show. “I can’t stay awake. And my mouth is too dry to continue talking. You’re watching the fast decline of my situation.”
Based on how he feels today, he said: “I don’t know if there will be a show tomorrow or ever again. This might be our last show. This is going to be a tough week. Because I am doing some goodbyes in person.”
He signed off, clearly depleted: “Bye for now. I hope to see you later. But it might not be. “
Adams as graciously shared much of his struggle publicly, in the intimate ways of social media.
As I’ve mentioned here, he was going to kill himself. He had a prescription. I don’t listen every day, but as best I can tell he never picked it up from the pharmacy. He also appreciated that the whole process is more complicated than advocates of assisted suicide suggest.
In recent days, Adams talked about how he’s converting to Christianity, how he has a relationship with Jesus. Pray for him and let him die in peace. Pray for a happy death.
His recording this morning is moving. He’s talking about some of the news of the day while trying to stay awake. He’s doing what he has become accustomed to do. And you get the impression he’d really rather talk about the news of the day than the day he might die.
I’m not sure a human can listen to today’s edition — even as he distracts himself with Greenland, Iran, Tim Walz, and robots — without tears.
God bless Scott Adams.
