On Tuesday, a federal judge sentenced conservative author and documentarian Dinesh D’Souza, who pled guilty to campaign fraud earlier this year, to a five-year probationary period.
D’Souza will spend the first eight months of his probation at a “community confinement center.” He will also be required to do a day of community service per week and pay a $30,000 fine.
Earlier this year, he pled guilty to providing two “straw donors” with $10,000 apiece to give to Republican New York Senate candidate Wendy Long’s 2012 run. D’Souza, who created the films 2016: Obama’s America and America: Imagine the World Without Her, said he believed he was “selectively” prosecuted because of his criticism of the president.
Federal prosecutors pushed for D’Souza to be sentenced for as much as 16 months in prison, but the judge ultimately spared him.
“I’m just relieved and want to thank the judge for imposing a fair sentence,” D’Souza said from the Manhattan federal court, according to Reuters.
