A Diplomatic Nicety Too Far

I wish to second a post by Alana Goodman at Contentions, which quotes President Obama: his statement that we Americans “don’t have a stronger friend and stronger ally than Nicolas Sarkozy and the French people.” We have stronger friends and allies in those who have stood and bled with us in Iraq and Afghanistan. Not just Britain, not just Australia — others, too.

I am all for the diplomatic niceties. And it would be hard to find a greater lover of France than I am. But the truth should have primacy.

NOTE: The French have been part of the coalition in Afghanistan, though not in Iraq, and I’m sorry I did not take account of this earlier. Vive la France, for a thousand reasons.
