Docs Reveal More of de Blasio’s Socialist Past

Documents detailing the activities and beliefs of the Nicaragua Solidarity Network of New York, an organization that Democratic mayoral candidate Bill de Blasio was a member of in the early 1990s, have been uncovered by BuzzFeed’s Andrew Kaczynski. The group not only explicitly supported the Sandinista revolutionaries in Nicaragua, it also, among other things, called President George H. W. Bush a “criminal and terrorist,” hosted events to support the Sandinistas, and seemed to have some affection for Fidel Castro.

Below are pictures of some of the more interesting documents.

A fundraising letter signed by Bill de Blasio commenting on the Sandinistas’ “tradition of grassroots democracy” and “humility that progressives throughout the world have found refreshing and necessary”:

A document labeling the 41st president an assassin, criminal, and terrorist:

An entire speech by Fidel Castro:

A rally call that says “Cuba will stay free” with the response, “drive the Yankees to the sea”:

And a flyer comparing Saddam Hussein’s invasion of Kuwait to Israel’s occupation of the West Bank and Gaza Strip:

De Blasio recently defended his support of the Sandinista movement. On Friday, he criticized the New York Times for their characterization of his Sandanista sympathies and his political philosophy, saying, “I thought the story clearly could have been more balanced.”
