The Politics of Anger

Mollie W. O’Reilly, of Commonweal magazine, tweets: “The more obviously unfit he is, the more supporting him becomes an eff-you to the system.”

I think she has put her finger on a very important dynamic of 2016. Just as every criticism of Black Lives Matter proves to BLM supporters how irredeemably racist American society is, every criticism of Trump proves to his supporters how irredeemably corrupt American politics is.

I think America has not become culturally degraded enough to collectively embrace such reductively emotional critiques. We’ll find out soon enough. (A pessimist would say, “too soon”; but I think the American character is not as awful as many op-ed writers would have us believe.)
