David Duke is a Trump man. He told his followers that a vote for anyone but Trump is “really treason to your heritage.”
He also said of Trump,
“He’s made it okay to talk about these incredible concerns of European Americans today, because I think European Americans know they are the only group that can’t defend their own essential interests and their point of view. He’s meant a lot for the human rights of European Americans.”
Human rights! From the Klan!
Also, I’m reminded of something I dislike about “African American”: It’s parallel to “European American.” “Black” and “white” are parallels. (Condi Rice made this point to me years ago, when arguing for “black.”)
Another thing: Are Italians, Spaniards, Portuguese, Slavs, and Greeks now full-on “white”? They were not thought so for some years in this country!
Anyway, enough of Duke. On to Louis Farrakhan, another American beauty. He said that Trump was the only candidate “who has stood in front of the Jewish community and said, ‘I don’t want your money.’”
And “anytime a man can say to those who control the politics of America, ‘I don’t want your money,’ that means, ‘You can’t control me.’ And they cannot afford to give up control of the presidents of the United States.”
The Jews control Obama? Which Jews? Howard Zinn (R.I.P.)? Noam Chomsky?
“Not that I’m for Trump,” Farrakhan reassured — “but I like what I’m looking at.”
Let us grant that you can’t control who endorses you or likes you. Ronald Reagan had this problem. But, as they would say at Trump rallies, les beaux esprits se rencontrent.
P.S. You could argue, of course, that if you bring Duke and Farrakhan together, you are a uniter.
P.P.S. A few days ago, Trump said, “My daughter is married to a Jew, who is an enthusiastic Israel supporter.” Well, that beats “some of my best friends”!
P.P.P.S. I’m not a Trump supporter — have I mentioned that? — but I don’t believe he is racist or anti-Semitic. I think he is simply … Trumpian. His own thing, his own self. Which is, of course, very American. As I’ve said many times, he is an American original, an adornment to the scene. An addition to the gaiety of life. An amazing float in the parade. I just don’t think he ought to be president.
