I take yuge exception to Kevin Williamson’s piece today: “The Stupid Psychopath Problem.” It is another hit job on Donald Trump, by someone obviously in the pay of Mitch McConnell, the Mexicans, and the Muslims. The three M’s! Four if you include both “Mitch” and “McConnell”!
Here is an example of Kevin’s malice and reckless disregard: “Trump is famously a physical coward who lied to stay out of the military during the Vietnam war, and he knows nothing about foreign policy, national defense, or the workings of the military, which is why all we ever hear from him is ‘get tough’ and ‘win.’”
Once upon a time, Trump was talking to Howard Stern about sleeping around — and the perils of venereal disease. “I’ve been so lucky in terms of that whole world,” he said. “It is a dangerous world out there — it’s scary, like Vietnam. Sort of like the Vietnam era. It is my personal Vietnam. I feel like a great and very brave solider.”
This is the man who, years later, would scorn the service of John McCain — who was shot down on his 23rd bombing raid over North Vietnam and then tortured for five and a half years.
Look, I understand the Howard Stern world: the joking around, the hyperbole. You gotta give a guy a break, and Donald Trump is one of the best talk-show guests of all time. He is one of the best television performers of all time. As I’ve said on many occasions, he’s more comfortable on television than most people are in their living rooms. He can host Saturday Night Live every month, as far as I’m concerned.
But the presidency is a big and serious job. And the Republican party is a vital and critical thing. I want to say to primary voters, Stop the madness.
