Trump’s Asterisk

Trump now has a number of nominee-like characteristics: He won three out of the first four contests, and finished second in the other; he has been strong across the ideological board among very conservatives, somewhat conservatives, and moderates; he has demonstrated an ability to win in the Northeast, the South, and the West. Anyone else and you would say this is a lock. The reason it isn’t necessarily is that Trump, obviously, has other traits you don’t associate with a nominee, from his high-profile dissents from his own party’s orthodoxies to his hatred for its immediate past president to his general outrageousness. Because of all this, there has to be an asterisk next to his otherwise stunning run over the last month.
