On “Meet the Press” just now, bestselling plagiarist (oops, I mean historian) Doris Kearns Goodwin suggested that in 2006, the current president really ought to read the letters of his father, George H.W. Bush, collected in a volume entitled All the Best. In it, she said, he could learn a lot about bipartisanship and how to bring the parties together. Yes, that’s really good advice. A politically successful president really ought to take advice from a one-term flop president who was rolled by the opposing party in 1990 and helped lead many millions of his voters to pull the lever for Ross Perot instead. My advice for 2006 is for the president to invite Doris into the White House, spend an hour getting her wise counsel, and then do everything exactly the opposite way. She’s like a reverse Karl Rove, I tell you!
