Dr. Ben Carson didn’t launch his presidential campaign when he stopped by The View on Tuesday, but he did offer his thoughts about a potential run.
“It is not something that I desire to do, and my hope is that someone will come along that excites the people, who really understands what America is all about, and really doesn’t want to change it in to something else,” he said. “If that happens, then I won’t do it, but I have so many people asking me, and as a patriotic American, I certainly have to think about it.”
While on the show, Carson discussed his new book One Nation, Donald Sterling, his famous speech at the National Prayer Breakfast last year, and his response when he was told to apologize to the president.
Carson also touched on Obamacare and the health-care system, linking the unpopular law to “neo-Marxist” thinking. In place of Obamacare, he proposed the most effective way to ensure coverage for everybody is through health-savings accounts.
Towards the end, co-host Whoopi Goldberg and Carson butted heads during a discussion about the harmful effects of welfare.
“When you rob someone of their incentive to go out there and improve themselves, you are not doing them any favors,” said Carson, who was raised by a single mother in Detroit. “What would be much more empowering is to use our intellect and our resources to give those people a way up and out.”
Goldberg countered that she was not ashamed about her time as a welfare recipient earlier in her life, but acknowledged that the “bizarre” system disincentivizes people and needs to be fixed.
