Several readers reacted to my earlier post (which was a cheap shot about Russian weakness for drink) with this sentiment, no doubt channeling Derb:

Given the safety record of Russian spacecraft vs. American (the last time the Russians lost cosmonauts in space was 1971), perhaps heavy drinking is more appropriate before a Shuttle flight than a Soyuz flight.
