Durbin Is Sorry — Sorry You Misunderstood Him

Dick Durbin’s non-apology is a perfect example of Washington at its worst, for what Durbin is claiming is that he was misunderstood, not acknowledging he said something wrong. “I sincerely regret if what I said caused anyone to misunderstand my true feelings,” he said, which is to say, he regrets nothing except that he got himself into a pickle. And this from a man who one day compares U.S. military personnel to Nazis and the Khmer Rouge to claim the next that his “true feelings” are that “our soldiers around the world and their families at home deserve our respect, admiration and total support.” Yeah, there’s no support like being called a Nazi. Right now, there’s nobody lower, tawdrier or scummier in American politics than Dick Durbin (more fulmination on the subject here).
