Jared Diamond made a big noise a couple of years ago when his book Collapse used Easter Island as a poster child for the idea of “ecocide,” where man destroys his environment and therefore himself. A lot of Easter Island specialists had serious qualms over Diamond’s version of the facts. Now it looks like his thesis has been pretty much disproved and it was genocide, not ecocide that destroyed the Rapa Nui civilization.
