Editorializing for the Ages

Looking up Newman’s Grammar of Assent on Google Books, I found that the 1891 copy they have scanned in is from the Harvard College Library, and ex libris John Livingston Lowes — a prominent litterateur of the first half of the 20th century. On the title page, Lowes has left, for all time, his comment: “Very ingenious sophistry” (underlining in original). Newman can be consoled that it has probably been many years since anyone has invaded Lowes’s own works with marginal commentary.
