Edwards Calling

John Edwards has written a letter to the FCC regarding what’s known as “spectrum management.” Basically, it deals with government regulation of the wireless (otherwise known as cell phone) industry. In it, he advocates Columbia Prof. Tim Wu’s new pet idea of creating a so-called “right to attach” any device to a wireless network.  This sounds nice in theory, but, as I’ve written before, I’m not at all convinced that it’s a good idea.  The wireless phone industry isn’t perfect, nor even close (and I’ve got to haggle with my carrier today, so I don’t doubt I’m about to have this brought home to me), but, to be extremely broad, we’re all better off if the industry can self-correct through competition and innovation rather than a regulatory regime that freezes the market in place.
