Empty Gown

Reviewing Thomas Sowell’s Intellectuals and Society in the April 5 NR, I poke fun at the way intellectuals swooned over Adlai Stevenson, seeing him as one of their own, when in fact he rarely picked up a book.

A reader adds something I missed.

Mr Derbyshire … You didn’t mention the marvelous detail that the only book [Stevenson] had next to his bed when he passed away was the “Social Register!”

Thank goodness today’s intellectuals would never fall for that kind of empty posing!
