Ethanol, the devil’s brew

Listen to the scientists: our ethanol mandates, subsidies and tariffs are driving up world food prices.

Some top international food scientists Tuesday recommended halting the use of food-based biofuels, such as ethanol, saying it would cut corn prices by 20 percent during a world food crisis.

President Bush continues to be on the wrong side:

“And the truth of the matter is, it’s in our national interest that our farmers grow energy, as opposed to us purchasing energy from parts of the world that are unstable or may not like us,” Bush said.

John McCain has been calling on Barack Obama to agree to a gasoline tax holiday, but it’s always easy to be Santa Claus. Will he, as Steve suggested last week, show some really courageous leadership on the issue of food prices and call for a suspension of ethanol blends this summer? It would also give the Democratic candidates a chance to show their hand — do they plan to be leaders or demagogues?
